Ngurunit-Loiyangalani- Chalbi Desert Traverse
Enjoy the Sun, Sand and Sea in Northern Kenya.
We still keep seeking beyond and this time we are looking North for magic. The Northern region of Kenya is vast and scenic. It is the home of magic and has remained comparatively inaccessible until now. Ranging from the lush highland green of the southern side of the Mathews range and Samburu National Park to the red sands of the northern borders with Ethiopia in the Chalbi desert, its terrain is varied, mysterious and extraordinarily beautiful.

A. EXPEDITION ITINERARY

Day 1: Nairobi to Ngurunit
Depart from Nairobi and drive north past Nanyuki and the beautiful farmlands of Timau to stop for lunch at Isiolo town. After lunch, we embark on the northern tour with a stopover for photos and sightseeing at Mt. Ololokwe. Proceed South to Ngurunit an oasis surrounded by tens of mountains and ranges popularly known as the Ndoto. On the way, you get to see beautiful ranges. The scenery is surreal. spend the night at Golbo Guest House.

Day 2: Ngurunit to Loiyangalani
In the morning visit the tiny interesting village with captivating traditionally dressed Samburu people living in simple, yet elegantly woven, grass huts and buy some souvenirs. Take a dive in the rockslides for those not heading to Mount Poi. Early morning- 2am-optional hike Mt Poi (2050m) which resembles the world’s largest loaf of bread from some angles, it’s a technical climber’s dream. It’s a great hike to the summit and the views are extraordinary. Later in the after as you head to Loiyangalani great views of Mount Kulal, a mountain with a volcanic origin, the lava fields define the landscape in the surrounding area and the mountain’s sides are steep and often slashed by deep canyons. The location of a peak as high as Mount Kulal in the middle of one of the driest regions of East Africa not only makes it unique topographically but also contributes to the particular ecosystem services the mountain and its forest provide the region. Later as the sun sets enter Loiyangalani Palm Shade Hotel to the night.

Day 3: Loiyangalani to North Horr
After breakfast Loiyangalani, take a walk through Loiyangalani Town – Optional, and at about 9.00am drive out and then take a boat ride to the famous El Molo people living on the shores of the lake and are 100% dependent on the lake for survival. They have some merchandise on display and you love them you can support their small economy.

At around 11.30am drive to the North Horr starting our journey into the desert expected there at late lunch. After lunch heads to the pool to cool off until about 5.30 when you head for sunset views by the dune, you can head back for more swim and later have dinner. Overnight at Palm Lodge North Horr.

Day 4: North Horr to Marsabit (via Chalbi Desert)
In the morning embark on the crossing of the Chalbi. The vast landscapes and sand dunes will amaze you. Head out to Marsabit via North Horr, Kalacha, and Chalbi On this day you get to drive through the Chalbi desert. It’s a fun and adventurous ride. Enjoy the beauty and spend the night star gazing. Overnight at Nomad Hotel in the cool forested town of Marsabit.

Day 5: Marsabit to Nairobi
In the morning drive up the mountain to the beautiful lake paradise. You will be in time to see the animals come out for a morning drink and splash, before heading out back to the city. Stopover at Nanyuki then proceed our journey to Nairobi to arrive early in the evening.
