Let’s go and experience the mountain differently, we seek to reach the summits but we also commit to being aware of every moment on the way… we call it connection with self and nature, a beautiful journey up this snow-capped mountain of East Africa right at the Equator. Mt. Kenya is one of the places every human should visit at least once in a lifetime. It offers a wholesome experience of fun, connection and self-discovery; so come with us and create your memories and live to tell your mountain story! Below is a brief description of the trail.
Day 1: Chogoria Forest gate (2650M ASl) to Road End Camp Camp (2950m ASl) – 3hrs, 6km walk, 300m ascent
Meet at 7.00am outside the International life House (or other agreed location in Nairobi) to board our ride to Chogoria, the drive will take about 3 hours. At Chogoria an early lunch will be waiting (self- catered). Enjoy as we chat with our contact team at the base of the mountain. . After lunch, take a transfer vehicle to the forest clearance, then 10km up from where the walk starts. The walk also allows for beautiful views of Mugi and Ithanguni Hills. We set camp at Road End and later in the evening dinner is served.
Day 2: Road End Camp (2,950m) to Mintos Basecamp (4,200m) -6-7hours 12km
After breakfast, we start our walk to Mintos base camp through the moorland. After an hour and half we are in view of the beautiful lake Ellis. The Hindu Valley forms a beautiful background for the lake and an amazing reflection carved on the lake in blue and green. Pure magic! We settle in and have lunch. Later in the afternoon, we can try our luck at fishing and those still with energies are welcome to summit Mugi Hill… the views at the summit of Mugi Hills are to die for, the main peaks are in full view, Ithanguni is much closer and inviting..We set camp at Mintos basecamp and after dinner take an earlier rest.
Day 3: Mintos Camp (4,200m) – Lenana Peak – Lake Ellis Camp (3,450m) 11-12Hours, 23km
We break camp at 2am towards the main peaks, after an hour above a flat marshy area at the end of the valley known as temple fields, we start our push up to the 3rd highest point in Kenya, arriving at point Lenana at 6:00am to witness if we are lucky the spectacle that is the sun piercing planet earth, a mother of all sunrises. After taking photographs and taking in all the beauty, we descend to Mintos Camp for breakfast and continue down to Lake Ellis.
Day 4: Lake Ellis Camp (3,450m) – Chogoria Gate (2,950m) 3Hours, 11km
After breakfast, we start our way down to finish the hike via Nithi Falls and the caves as we exit to join the classic Chogoria trail. Along the trail, just turn and look back to where you came from. We are expected at the Chogoria gate at 10.30am where we board our transfer vehicle to Chogoria town and onwards to Nairobi.
NOTE
On tips;
This is dependent on the service provided – but we recommend 10 USD per day for the guide, 8 USD per day for the Chef and 5 USD for each porter per day. The final decision on how much to tip is up to you.
Water
Drinking water will be. boiled however if you can, carry water purifying tablets for your drinking water
Altitude Sickness
Standing at 4985m going to Lenana Peak the altitude is going to be an issue especially when you have not been this high before and you are unsure of how your body will react. We recommend a high altitude drug ‘Diamox’. You may need to visit a doctor to get a prescription.
