Let’s go and experience the mountain differently, we seek to reach the summits but we also commit to being aware of every moment on the way… we call it connection with self and nature, a beautiful journey up this snow-capped mountain of East Africa right at the Equator. Mt. Kenya is one of the places every human should visit at least once in a lifetime. It offers a wholesome experience of fun, connection and self-discovery; so come with us and create your memories and live to tell your mountain story! Below is a brief description of the trail…
Day 1: Naromoru Gate – Met Station Camp
We depart from Nairobi at 7.00am and driver to Naromoru Park Gate for registration and where the hike starts, 2600m. From the gate, we keep to the park track which follows the crest of a board ridge between the Northern and Southern Naromoru valleys. The hike is easy and it’s a pleasant walk through the forest. About two thirds of the way up after the bridge there are good views to the left north down into the Northern Naromoru valley. The trek ends at Met station 3,000m where we camp for the night. Dinner is served and we have a restful evening.
Day 2: Met Station Camp- Mackinders Camp
After an early morning breakfast, we head uphill on the track past the radio must. The trek runs into a path and after another 30 minutes, we will reach the end of the forest belt and enter the moorland. This is the vertical bog conditions ranging from damp to glutinous depending on when it last rained. We continue through the moorlands until the trek improves and we reach a fork overlooking Teleki Valley to reach Mackinders Camp, 4,200m. We camp overnight at Mackinders and dinner is served.
Day 3: Mackinders Camp/Point Lenana/ Old Moses Camp
We break camp at 3am towards the main peaks, after an hour above a flat marshy area at the end of the valley known as temple fields, we start our push up to the 3rd highest point in Kenya, arriving at point Lenana at 6:00am to witness, if we are lucky, the spectacle that is the sun piercing planet earth, a mother of all sunrises.
We get back to Shipton base camp where we will have a proper breakfast and later descend to Old Moses camp.
Day 4: Old Moses Camp to Nairobi
After breakfast, we board our transfer vehicle to Nairobi.
