Mount Meru (4,566 m) Trek Itinerary – Tanzania

Mount Meru (4,566 m) TrekSummit Socialist Peak | February Departure

Mount Meru (4,566 m) Trek -Kicks off February with a classic East African high-altitude adventure to Mount Meru. Rising to 4,566 m, Socialist Peak is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and Africa’s fourth-highest—a striking, wildlife-rich ascent set within Arusha National Park. Expect dramatic crater views, close encounters with plains game, and breathtaking panoramas of Mount Kilimanjaro floating on the horizon.

This well-paced itinerary balances acclimatization, scenery, and summit success—perfect as a standalone climb or as preparation for Kilimanjaro.

Day 1: Travel to Arusha

Arrive in Arusha, Tanzania. Meet the team, gear check, and overnight at a comfortable hotel.

Day 2: Arusha → Miriakamba Hut

1,500 m (4,900 ft) → 2,500 m (8,200 ft) | ~4 hours hiking

Start at Momela Gate and trek through open grassland where buffalo and warthogs roam—giraffes and elephants are sometimes spotted. The trail climbs steadily into montane forest. Lunch is enjoyed at the waterfall, followed by a gentle ascent through bird-rich woodland inhabited by black-and-white colobus monkeys. By mid-afternoon, enjoy your first close views of the crater cliffs and Ash Cone before reaching Miriakamba Hut, set in a peaceful grassy glade with views toward Kilimanjaro.

Day 3: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut

2,500 m (8,200 ft) → 3,500 m (11,700 ft) | ~4 hours hiking

A sustained climb leads from lush forest up Elephant Back Ridge into giant heather and moorland. Arrive at Saddle Hut for lunch and rest. In the afternoon, take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m / 12,533 ft)—about 1 hour up, 30 minutes down—rewarded with sweeping views over the park and crater.

~5+ hours up | ~5+ hours down

An early start (around 12:00 a.m.) begins with a steep climb to Rhino Point (3,800 m), then along an ash-and-rock ridge to Cobra Point (4,350 m). From here, the final push reaches Socialist Peak (4,566 m) with unforgettable sunrise views—crater rim cliffs, the Ash Cone below, the Rift Valley beyond, and Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds.

Descend carefully along one of Africa’s most dramatic ridgelines, returning to Saddle Hut for brunch and rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut.
