Trail Description:
- Starting Point (Bamboo Gate): The trail begins at Njabini and follows the Elephant Hill trail markers. The starting point is 3 kilometers into the trail at the Bamboo Gate.
- Desperado and Elephant’s Back: The trail takes you through points like Desperado, the Tail, and walking on the back of the elephant towards the summit of Elephant Hill. This section offers stunning views of Mount Kenya on clear mornings.
- Kinangop Valley: As you near the summit of Elephant Hill, you’ll take a right into a steep descent into the Kinangop Valley. This area can be challenging, especially when wet, due to heather and boggy moorland.
- 12 Apostles: After walking in the valley for about 4 kilometers, you take another right turn. This less-traveled path leads you to the 12 Apostles peaks. The trail takes you through fresh moorland, streams, and rivers as you approach these prominent peaks.
- Summiting the 12 Apostles: You’ll encounter an exposed section for about 60 meters on the way to the summit. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kinangop. The summit offers a unique view of numerous streams and rivers flowing from Mount Kinangop. You’ll find the highest point of the 12 Apostles after a short scramble.
- The Eye: Just below the summit, there’s a notable feature known as “The Eye,” which is a large hole. It’s even observable from Elephant Hill if visibility is good. This is a great spot to rest, have a snack or lunch, and take photos.
- Return to Njabini: After enjoying the views and refreshments, you’ll retrace your steps back to Njabini, completing the challenging hike with a sense of accomplishment.
This trail offers a rewarding but physically demanding hiking experience with stunning views along the way. You should be well-prepared for the long duration and challenging terrain.
