Elephant Hill Bamboo Trek Aberdares

Welcome to the heart of Aberdares, where Elephant Hill stands tall, beckoning all mountain lovers to join us on one of the finest trails in the region!

Trail Overview:
Commencing our journey from Njabini Forest Station (formerly Kinangop South Forest Station), just 4km from Njabini shopping center, the Elephant Hill hike offers a captivating experience. Starting at an altitude of 2500m, the 4 to 5-hour ascent unfolds through diverse terrains, revealing the intersection of human settlements and receding forest boundaries.

Trail Highlights:

  • Forest Cover and Shamba System: The initial kilometers lead through relatively flat forest-covered terrain, showcasing evidence of human cultivation in the shamba system.
  • Bamboo Zone: As you ascend, a bamboo-laden trail welcomes you, adorned by towering bamboo canopies, occasional elephant footprints, and signs of wildlife in this game reserve.
  • Moorland Zone: Reaching the moorland zone, be captivated by the unique flora, including Tussock Grass and Giant Heather. Breathtaking views of Sasumua Dam and Ndakaini Dam unfold, marking your arrival at “Point Despair.”
  • Summit: Ascending over rocky terrain at an altitude of 3400m, reach the Elephant’s back. The trail levels off, revealing the summit at 3650m with a distinctive view of Kinangop peak to the north. A short 5-minute climb brings you to the pinnacle.

Descent:
While the descent is as challenging as the ascent, offering stunning panoramas, it takes 3 to 4 hours to return to the Forest Station.

Caution:

  • Weather: The weather can change rapidly at this altitude. Ensure you have rain gear and warm clothes.
  • Observation: Always keep an eye out for signs of clouds forming.
