Kijabe Kiharu Escarpment Trail

Kijabe Kiharu Escarpment Trail | Day Hike

Date: 17th January
Second hike of the year — and we’re turning up the terrain.

The Kijabe Kiharu Escarpment Trail is a bold, historic, and deeply atmospheric hike that pulls you into the backcountry heart of Kijabe and the Kinale Forest landscape. This is a trail of contrasts—quiet villages, dramatic escarpments, forgotten railway lines, and forested climbs that reward every step.

The Trail Experience

Our circuit begins at Gichiengo, Kijabe Junction, easing us gently into the landscape as we pass through Magina Village. Here, the trail feels warm and familiar—filled with backcountry sounds, earthy smells, and open views of the Great Rift Valley stretching wide below.

From the village, we descend into the Kijabe section of Kinale Forest, where the path leads us onto the historic Lunatic Railway line. We follow this iconic route for about an hour, walking through railway cuttings and forest corridors steeped in history.

Hot Springs & The Tunnel of Darkness

The railway trail leads us to the hot springs and the legendary tunnel locally known as “Kamungu ka Nduma” — the Tunnel of Darkness. When water levels allow, hikers can explore the tunnel, and a flashlight is highly recommended.

Although parts of the tunnel were damaged by landslides, the land is still healing—and the story of the terrain is written clearly on the ground.

Forest Hills, Waterfalls & The Final Ascent

From the tunnel, the trail rises toward Kiharu Hill, one of the many forested hills within the Kinale ecosystem. We pass waterfalls tucked into the valley before beginning a steady, moderate ascent through cypress plantations.

The climb takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, gaining elevation to about 2,600m ASL. From the upper sections, the trail transitions through cultivated farmlands, offering a unique blend of forest and human landscape.

Our hike concludes near Soko Mjinga, close to the flyover, where our transport awaits.
