Untamed Wilderness, Secluded Splendor
Once the highest mountain in Africa, the longest caldera in the world. High in the mist-wreathed hills of western Kenya is a towering volcanic giant, crowned by a vast caldera etched by glacial tarns, honeycombed by labyrinthine caves, fissured by valleys and cascaded by streams. We approach the mountain from Uganda side.
Come join the home of mountain lovers as we walk this magical trail!!

The goal today is to ascend to the top of the caldera at the Wagagai Peak which is at 4321 meters. The views from the caldera are worth the hike up the mountain. After our moment in the highest point in eastern Uganda it is time to walk across seeking the border and do the mountain crew hand over. At the border we are received by kenyan crew and we say goodbye to our Ugandan guides, porters and cooks.
Walking further across through the caldera we cross over to Kenya some 11Km to Koitobos peak (4221m asl) and the drop further down to Road End Camp 6km.
Day 6: Road End Camp to Mutamaiyu Camp
After breakfast it our second last day in the mountain, we continue further down by exiting the moorland and into the rainforest on the kenyan side. Koitobos Peak is partially visible depending on the section of the terrain. This trek down is equally decorated with diverse flora and fauna. We arrive at Mutamaiyu camp in the evening or early afternoon and spend our night. This trek is approximately 18km.
Day 7: Mutamaiyu Camp to Chorlim Gate to Nairobi
Its time to trek down back to the gate, we use a different route to access the salt lick for elephants. Through this route you get to hug the oldest tree probably in Kenya estimated to be 300 years. A few meters from the tree is an elephant path that drops into the salt lick and into the mouth of the longest cave in the park. The Kitum Cave!!!.
We live our moment at the salt lick if the hosts are not around and then if time allows those interested in going into the caves can venture into it.
From the caves it’s a 6km trek to the gate to finish our hike. From here we connect with our transfer vehicle / flight to Nairobi.
