Some say it is the most difficult others say its over rated- there only one sure way to find out. Do it yourself!!. The trail that has come of age and has become very popular with hikers across the country in the recent years stealing the glory from Mount Longonot. It is a great outing for a day hike to just unwind away from city for a few hours and also acts as an excellent prep-hike for the big mountains in the region- Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro among others

Trail Head Njabini Forest Gate Aberdares Kenya

The trail is accessed from Njabini at the south-end of the Aberdares in Nyandarua County. It is about 90km from Nairobi and with construction along Waiyaki easing up, within 1.5hours you should be at the Trail head from the Nairobi City Center.

Starting at Njabini Forest Gate – the trails follows the vehicles tracks that give accesess to farmers permitted to farm in the forest reserve as they take care of the trees when they are young. a forest management system known as the shamba system.

Past the forest reserve you enter the park proper the sign board marked the starting point some 3 km from Njabini Gate.

From here it is another 2km to the bamboo gate- from here its another 1.5km of the most treacherous part of the trail especially when it is raining.

The bamboo section exit at Point ofDesparado . The point is named as such becuase in the early and probably even in present day people some still feel like its enough at this point. The neatly hemmed bamboo forest looks like a well manicured fields below

The vegetation is changes a few meters after this point to welcome giant heather covered in Old man beard algae

From here on a clear day views of Njabini below Sasumua Dam further out.

Another 1.5 km and you are at the the tail another marked point along this trail. At this point it good to reference that elephant Hills assumes the shape of the Elephant and hence thisnpoint is called the Tail

The trail here levels up with minimal elevation change but with awesome views of the valley rolling into Murang’a on one side and to Njabini and Engineer to the other. As you approach the summit of Elephant Hill the terrain becomes rocky and some covered in Moss be careful here it can be slippery especially when wet.

At the summit after 9km of beautiful ascent through 3 mountains zones- it time to take some well deserved rest , take some photos and replenish by taking a snack.

The views of Mount Kinangop are just magic- the two peaks from this point looking like a big gate. Also beautiful of Kikuyu Escarpment, Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, Mount Suswa- it is a very rewarding peak optically speaking.

Of note though the journey keep drinking water. Remember this is high altitude hike and consistent hydration is key to  a successful ascent

After taking your moment at the summit its time to get down. The peak weather can change very fast and without notice. It could be shining one moment and the next you being pelted with hail stones. Be well prepared with Rain gear to protect your self from the  elements

Trail Summary;

Total Distance from Njabini Gate – Summit and Back- 18km

Starting Elevation; 2750m

Highest Elevation: 3650m

Estimated time; 6-7 Hours

Is this trail suitable for beginners?

This trail is rated difficult due to the its high altitude nature and the  near 1000m change in elevation. If you find yourself here as your first hike – calm down and take it easy, take it slow to allow you body to acclimate. Also drink a lot of water to reduce the effects of high altitude. As you can see above the altitude change is quite significant.
